Using those tips and keeping the actual journal stored in a secure location when not in use will provide a much higher degree of security than, say, writing passwords down on sticky notes and putting them on a monitor.

Password Managers are an alternative to the written journal concept. Password Managers can be found on many web browsers and as stand-alone products for your laptop and mobile devices. The idea is simple: remember a complex master password to access the Password Manager, and the Manager keeps track of everything else. If you get locked out of your Password Manager and have no way to access it, every single password you have stored on the manager is inaccessible. 

We've tried several password managers over the years, and the one we use is Dashlane.
